A resident of Crystal River, Florida. I studied art in New York, Connecticut and California. I received an intaglio printmaking scholarship from San Jose State University in California where I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Studio Art in 1989. I have an Associates Degree in Art History along with a Florida Professional Educators Certificate in Art Education. I am currently working on a series inspired by an artists residency in the Everglades National Park.
I work in printmaking, collage and mixed media. My inspiration is drawn from life experiences and my creative work becomes an extraordinary journey revealing a visual counterpart to the invisible and often illusive world of thoughts and emotions. I reflect on my experiences, relate these to history and intuition, and then use visual imagery to illustrate these concepts.
Symbolism, color and movement are integral parts of my work. I use historical and contemporary symbols relating to the current theme I am working with and include these in my work. The movement within each piece represents dynamic and evolving energy. I use an intuitive approach to art and allow the creative process to lead me to my subject matter and then follow the natural movement and direction of each piece. I believe each piece has something to say, I just have to find the visual imagery to interpret it.
I combine age old printmaking techniques which includes hand mixed dry pigments, with metals, wood, plastics and found objects; and then layer these elements into a shadowbox. I like to experiment with new forms, new ideas and new approaches without completely sacrificing the classical and traditional. The interplay of materials is a wonderful and extraordinary challenge representing diverse and ever changing forms.
