Giacometti's sculpture set a record sale at Sotheby's and for public auction as the sculpture sold to an anonymous buyer, who bid over the phone, for .......$104,327,006. The buyer (and competitive bidders) consider the offering to be a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Giacometti, who lived 1901 to 1966, was a key player in surrealism and son of the painter Giovanni Giacometti.
Sotheby's indicated that bidding was brisk due to the strong demand for quality works of impressionist and modern art.
Other works that sold at the same auction Wednesday:
Gustav Klimt's Kirche in Cassone went for $45.4 million.
Paul Cézanne's Pichet et Fruits sur une table sold for $20 million.
And, yes, there are people who appreciate fine art! Hurray for the art world!
